******************** SOLVANG AUTUMN DOUBLE
The team at Planet Ultra wrote: This year's Solvang Autumn Double will be held brevet-style, which means it will be 100% self-supported. With a brevet-style event it's fine if only a few show up; but we won't be able to be there if we can't cover at least our travel costs.
If we can get 75 riders on the roster before the end of this month, and at least 6-8 volunteers, we're happy to provide support for the ride.
We certainly understand that you like to "wait and see" how your training is going, or what the weather may be... Or maybe you only want to do fully supported doubles. But here's why we need you to sign up NOW for Fall Solvang if you want it to happen.
Many, if not most event costs are paid at least a month in advance. Right now we have less than 20 between the metric century and the double. Entry fees collected so far will not cover the expenses related to obtaining local permits and the minimum charges for insuring the event (which are just TWO of the many costs related to hosting an event).
So we have to fix a deadline to make a decision whether the event is viable and support-able. The one-month-out date is September 25th. If you want a fully supported event we need you to SIGN UP NOW. If you're willing to ride brevet-style, you may pay by credit card; and if we get enough riders and volunteers to support it, we'll ask for additional entry fees to bring it up to usual DC fees. Fair? If you don't want to ride unless it's fully supported, choose the CashPay or OffLine method, and you'll pay when we know the final plan.
If you want the ride supported, please bring someone with you who's willing to man an aid station or two; and let us know NOW that you can do that.
We need your help to keep the supported doubles alive. The ones in more remote / more expensive venues, cannot survive without at least 75 riders. We will be unable to host doubles in the future if we can't get the numbers up. Over the years fixed costs have increased 50-100% or more. With so few riders, even increasing entry fees isn't enough as the per rider costs have skyrocketed.
All information is at the Planet Ultra web site HERE
******************** DEAD OF WINTER DOUBLE
Now in its 13th year, the DoW will be held on Dec 6th and 7th, 2025.
The ride gives you a chance to complete that last Double of the year and/or get that Volunteer credit needed for one of the CTC awards.
We also offer you the opportunity to ride a second Double on Day 2 to help you increase your total number of Doubles for the year.
More information is HERE. If you have any questions please reach out to lawheelmen2019@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing you there.
******************** In 1987, Lon Haldeman and Pete Penseyres rode Across America from Huntington Beach, California to Atlantic City, New Jersey, on a Tandem in 7 Days and 14 Hours. Their record is still the fastest non-stop crossing of the United States by bicycle!!
On the last day, Pete was interviewed while riding on the back of the tandem: "The important point is to set a goal just beyond your reach. So if you do meet it, you'll feel really good about the fact that you did your best, considering the circumstances. As opposed to just like cruising in and then two days later, you start thinking back, Gee we could have done better. There won't be any of that. We won't have any regrets about how hard we rode. And whether we made it. We''ve done the best we could the whole way. And we're going to feel great tonight!!" ******************** We look forward to seeing and riding with everyone on the Double Centuries in 2025!!
